Nelli Sheffer was born in Tel Aviv in 1952 and is a graduate of Hadassa Community College in Jerusalem where he completed his studies in Technical Photography, and Tel Aviv University where he obtained last year his MFA in Film & Television. The Nelli Sheffer Photography Studio in Tel Aviv was opened in 1979.

Food & Food Culture Book Photography

In 1982 Nelli Sheffer began to specialize in food photography and started making illustrations for cookbooks. In 1988, collaborating with Israel Aharoni, an award winning Israeli chef, The Italian Cook Book was shot in Italy marking a significant event in Israeli publishing. This was the first time that an Israeli food publication was shot “on-location” abroad. Subsequent cooperation between them has resulted in having a weekly food column in “7 Days” the weekend supplement of “Yedioth Acharonoth”, the creation of many more cook books focused on subjects as diverse as Chinese Food Culture and French Cuisine which have also been shot abroad in their respective countries.

Additionally, Nelli Sheffer has published two books with the prestigious American art publisher Harry Abrams. The two books are “Food Markets of The World” (authored by Mimi Sheraton) and “Eating Alfresco – the best Street Food of the world” (authored by Israel Aharoni). Two books about the food of Israel were published, one by Knopf- The Foods of Israel Today (authored by Joan Nathan) and the other one by Periplus- The Food of Israel (author Sherry Ansky).

Nelli Sheffer is a regular contributor and illustrator of food and travel articles and columns for local Israeli magazines and periodicals, food companies, restaurants and catering companies and has an extensive easily accessed stock library with thousands of images. Just recently WHO (World Health Organization) chose to use his images to illustrate their publications on food safety.

To date, Nelli Sheffer has published an impressive 60 books .

The studio works with the major food companies in Israel for advertising, packaging and catalogues illustrations. Regular clients include: Coca Cola, Pizza Hut, Domino’s Pizza, McDonald’s, Elite, Telma, Knorr, Osem, Vita, Aviv Matzot, Sunfrost, El-Al, Beit Hashita, Kapulsky, Tivol, Mahlabane, Yavne, Apropo, Strauss and Dorot.

Recent Projects

For the last year and a half Nelli Sheffer Is engaged, together with Israel Aharoni, with the book temporary titled "Food along the Silk Road". During the resaerch for this book they travelled to China, Uzbekistan and Eastern Turkey in search for the origins of different foods and dishes.
